The WMS evaluato
rs understand the demands on today’s dairy producers and their expert evaluations are the foundation of any long-term programme to build a better herd. Our team will recommend a balanced approach in terms of traits for each individual herd. Our data is easy to understand and recommendations of first, second and third choice matings are left with you to use on farm at the end of every visit.
You don’t have to wait for results and you don’t even need to spend time poring over the proofs to find the best bulls for your herd – unless you want to. Should you want to try a particular bull, or do the bull selections yourself then let your adviser know. It always remains your choice.

Scoring the cows is the key to commercial success. The WMS offers the most rigorous assessment in the UK today.
No other mating programme in the UK comes anywhere near to assessing each cow in this impartial and comprehensive way. Each cow is scored against 17 key type traits, all of economical importance and all traits with 10% or higher heritability.
The number of traits allows for frequent correlations between traits to be addressed together. Cows are
scored initially as freshly calved heifers, then again at third lactation, proving how meticulous the WMS is as an animal matures and changes during her working life. Regular evaluator visits coincide with calving patterns to add calved heifers to the programme and reassess others.
Scores build up to form a picture of both an individual cow’s, and the whole herd’s, strengths and weaknesses. Farmers can then make informed decision based on three sire choices for each cow to satisfy requirements for performance, type and price.
The WMS programme correctively mates each individual cow, matching her weaknesses to the bull’s strengths. A choice of three sire recommendations is generated, allowing for effcient use of semen, particularly where expensive bulls are being used.
A unique feature of the WMS programme is the fact that the whole process is completed on farm, leaving the farmer with sire recommendations for the whole herd, details of the sires selected and data scores for the animals evaluated that day.
Everything the WMS does gives added value to you, the farmer. We also offer some unique additional services which are proving increasingly popular with UK dairy farmers.
Maiden-Mate:
Accelerated herd development Maiden-Mate is the only programme in the world designed specifically for the corrective mating of maiden heifers. Available exclusively from WMS, Maiden-Mate allows for the corrective mating of maiden heifers using linear information on the dam and pedigree information on the sire obtained from the Cattle Information Service or National Milk Records. This information is used to predict the parent average type of the offspring. By correctively mating maiden heifers accurately and effectively at this early stage, the development within the herd can be accelerated and undertaken a whole generation earlier.
The impact of inbreeding on any herd leads to reduced cow health, production, longevity and fertility, which combine to hit the producer’s bottom line. It’s a growing problem, with inbreeding rates within the UK national herd continuing to rise.
The WMS programme is focused on significantly reducing inbreeding within matings. Farmers know they can trust our in-depth evaluation and analysis of pedigree information to help protect against inbreeding going back four generations, ensuring the prevention of the losses it can cause. When it comes to recessives, the WMS combines computer analysis with the cow’s pedigree information to let you make use of the best sires while avoiding carrier to carrier matings e.g. Blad, CVM, Mulefoot.
